AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries shown above the traditional results for many queries, with cited source links. As of 2026 they appear on a growing share of searches — heavily on informational queries, rarely on transactional ones — and they suppress organic clicks when present. Citation behavior shifts fast: the share of AI Overview citations coming from top-10 ranking pages roughly halved within a year.
